To make it easy to plan your winter trip to Kalispell and northwest Montana, here are a few things to do, see and experience.

Ski + Stay

If you plan to downhill ski or snowboard, Kalispell is the place you want to stay. To the north is Whitefish Mountain Resort and its 3,000 acres of terrain. To the south is Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, with sweeping views of Flathead Lake. The best part? With Kalispell as your homebase, you can ski both. Plus, when you book two nights at a participating Kalispell hotel, we’ll give you two free lift tickets to Blacktail Mountain Ski Area. Be sure to book your stay here.

Go Beyond the Ski Slopes

While skiing is the most popular winter activity in northwest Montana, there are so many other things to see, do and experience. Get out into the mountains on a guided snowmobiling trip with Swan Mountain Outfitters, enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride with Clydesdale Outpost or Bar W Guest Ranch, walk through the tree-lined trails at Lone Pine State Park or set out on a guided snowshoe adventure in Glacier National Park. The Wachholz College Center also hosts events, concerts and performances all winter, which is a great way to end the night.

Glacier National Park

Kalispell is 32 miles from the west entrance of Glacier National Park. During the winter, the park transforms into a wonderland, with most of its roads being closed to vehicular travel. However, don’t let that stop you from visiting. From the west entrance, you can drive into Apgar Village and up to Lake McDonald Lodge. If you cross-country ski or snowshoe, set out on the Going-to-the-Sun Road and enjoy the untouched snow as you skate or walk through the park. The foot of Lake McDonald is also a prime location to take in the night sky.

Explore Downtown Kalispell

Beyond playing in the area’s great outdoors, you should plan to spend time in downtown. This is where you can feel the heartbeat of Kalispell, as historic buildings house local businesses that include clothing shops, outdoor stores, restaurants, galleries and more. From downtown, it’s also easy to visit one (or all) of our three museums that share the past and present of Kalispell. Stroll through the Conrad Mansion Museum, Glacier Art Museum or Northwest Montana History Museum to learn more about the history of the area, from Indigenous nations to the modern-day founders of Kalispell.

Where to Eat + Drink

Kalispell is quickly establishing itself as one of Montana’s top culinary destinations. Any trip here should include visits to our locally owned restaurants, breweries, cidery and more. Dig into the best BBQ in the West at DeSoto Grill. Dine in a historic Kalispell building and enjoy a locally raised steak at Mercantile Steakhouse. Warm up at Casa Luna and try their Spanish cuisine. End the day at Moose’s Saloon with the best pizza in Kalispell. And that’s just the beginning – see all of our culinary offerings here.
