Here in Kalispell, Montana, we’re fortunate to have four distinct seasons, each bringing its own set of activities, offerings and experiences to our mountain town and the surrounding area. And while we love the weather that comes with the seasons, believe us when we tell you that we understand the feelings that come when rain or snow infringes on your plans.
To help make the most of your time in our corner of Montana, we’ve put together a guide to five of the best indoor activities in Kalispell.
1. Visit Three Museums
While our community isn’t large, it is brimming with arts and culture, including three distinct indoor museums that are ready and waiting to introduce you to various facets of Kalispell. Start with a deep dive into the history of the region at the Northwest Montana History Museum. Located in a historic building downtown, the museum has a variety of exhibits that include American Indian history, Glacier National Park and northwest Montana. Next up, head to the Conrad Mansion Museum for a docent-led tour of the home of Kalispell’s modern-day founder Charles E. Conrad, his wife Lettie and their children. Round out your museum tour with a visit to the Glacier Art Museum. Housed in a historic Carnegie library building, the Glacier Art Museum helps preserve and tell the story of the culture of Kalispell, Montana’s Flathead Valley and Glacier National Park.
Insider tip: while you can take a self-guided tour of the Conrad Mansion Museum, docent-led tours are the best way to take a deep dive into the history.
2. Golf Indoors
While golf is typically reserved for warm weather, you can golf year-round in Kalispell at Clubhouse Lounge. With four top-of-the-line indoor golf simulators, it’s a great place to keep up on your golf game, while escaping the weather outside. An added bonus: you can enjoy adult beverages and burgers, made with locally sourced beef.
3. Rock Climb
The climbing wall inside Logan Health Medical Fitness Center is 30 feet high and 38 feet wide, with various routes, six types of ropes and plentiful hand holds. New to climbing or want to perfect your skills? Take a private climbing lesson, go bouldering, do a certified climb or enjoy hang time.
4. Visitor Centers
In the hustle and bustle of trying to get outside and hit the trail, sometimes it’s easy to overlook visitor centers. Make the best use of the rain and take your time perusing the visitor centers at Lone Pine State Park or Apgar Visitor Center in Glacier National Park. The visitor center at Lone Pine provides educational overviews of area flowers and wildlife. Be sure to check the park’s schedule, as they regularly offer workshops and activities. The Crown of the Continent Discovery Center in West Glacier is a great place to visit, too. They have displays, as well as a gift shop, local brews and more.
5. Soak up Downtown Kalispell
Kalispell has plentiful breweries that are ideal for spending some time, meeting locals and tasting Montana through made-right-here beer. Before (or after) sipping on the flavors of Big Sky Country, check out local shops and stores. While you’re here, create your own location at Sage & Cedar.
