Volunteering is a great way to experience the local culture and give back to a community, all while having a transformative experience that fosters personal growth, development and new connections.
In Kalispell and northwest Montana, there are several organizations that are in need of volunteers to help with various projects throughout the year. Some noteworthy organizations: the Flathead Rivers Alliance, the Flathead Trails Association, the Flathead Food Bank, the North Shore Nordic Club and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation.
The Flathead Trails Association offers a variety of ways to get involved, from volunteer vacations centered around building trails to events and guided hikes. Their website allows you to select a volunteer opportunity that fits your interests by activity, location, interest and season.
The Flathead Rivers Alliance is seeking volunteers to become river ambassadors and citizen scientists. Volunteering opportunities focus on the Middle Fork, North Fork and South Fork of the Flathead River. As a river ambassador, you’ll help educate visitors about the importance of protecting the river and its ecosystem. In the role of a citizen scientist, you will provide assistance in monitoring water quality, tracking wildlife populations and more.
The Flathead Food Bank seeks donations and volunteer year-round. The volunteer opportunities include tasks such as replenishing store shelves, organizing food items, conducting customer interviews, inputting data, packaging groceries, maintaining cleanliness, reconditioning perishable goods, gathering donated items, and distributing food to elderly community members.
If you’re an avid Nordic skier, consider contacting the North Shore Nordic Club to see how you can help them continue to provide groomed cross-country skiing near Kalispell. Volunteering with the North Shore Nordic Club typically involves maintaining trails, helping with events or even coaching youth programs, which is a great option for locals.
Each year, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation posts volunteer adventures, which combine summer, volunteering and one of the most epic wildernesses in the U.S. The best part: you can volunteer for a day or a week. It’s also a great option for families with kids 12+ to get involved.
Additional volunteer opportunities are available with Montana State Parks, DREAM Adaptive, Foys to Blacktail Trail, Glacier Institute and Glacier National Park Volunteer Associates.
By volunteering with these organizations, you’ll not only give back to the places you’ve enjoyed, but you’ll also have the opportunity to connect with our locals and meet new friends.
