Skiing & Snowboarding
The only Montanans who sleep through the winter are the bears. The rest of us flock to the mountains with skis and boards to revel in feet and feet of powdery fun. Staying in Kalispell puts you equidistant from two great ski experiences. To the north 22 miles, there’s Whitefish Mountain Resort, a perennial national favorite and one of the 10 largest ski areas in the country. To the south 28 miles, there’s Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, a local’s secret with great intermediate terrain and stunning views of Flathead Lake. Both resorts have near-by groomed cross-country ski trails as well. You really can’t go wrong, especially if you split your time between the two of them.
Whitefish Mountain Resort, formerly known as Big Mountain, is a world class resort with more than 3,000 acres of terrain. Visible from downtown Kalispell, the slopes beckon skiers and snowboarders of every skill level and interest. The mountain features 2,353 feet of vertical drop spread out over more than 3,000 acres of skiable terrain served by 14 lifts. In addition to earning the top ranking in overall satisfaction for ski areas in the West by SKI Magazine, the world-class resort also ranks No. 1 for best snow in the West and in the top 10 for service, value, grooming, kid friendliness, scenery and charm.
For a more low-key atmosphere, powder hounds can turn to Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, located 28 miles southwest of Kalispell. This north-facing area features more than 1,000 acres of mostly intermediate runs, plus several miles of groomed Nordic skiing … perfect for a winter skiing biathlon. Blacktail Mountain is affordable and family friendly with a cozy lodge for fireside lunch breaks and a full bar and grill on the upper level for après ski. The slopes situated high above Flathead Lake, offer spectacular views and consistent snow through mid-April.
